| Name: | Psmith: A Sort of Phantasmagorical Redundancy |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 08-17 |
| Location: | Canada |
Character Demographics:
Fandom: Wodehouse
Name: Rupert Eustace Psmith (see note)
Age: 23
Physical Appearance: Very tall, very slender, very nattily-dressed. Dark of hair and solemn of expression.
Education: Eton, Sedleigh for his last year, then Cambridge.
Occupation: Late of fishmongery, but please do not mention it. Currently a general man-at-arms, if you will.
Significant Other: None just now, but he still has a certain familiar fondness in his heart for school friend Comrade Jackson
Sexual Preference: Nominally straight, but he is a product of the Edwardian-era English public school system. It's probably safe to say he's bi.
Character Biography:
History: "Let us start at the beginning. My infancy. When I was but a babe, my eldest sister was bribed with sixpence an hour by my nurse to keep an eye on me and see that I did not raise Cain. At the end of the first day she struck for a shilling, and got it. On to my school days, in the sheltered cloisters of old Eton - but I am boring you; I see it in your eye; I must not take such liberties; I shall let my typist speak for me." It should first be noted that he was born with the name of Smith, but seeing that the world is rather overstocked therewith, he thought it best to alter it; Smythe is "a cowardly evasion," and the vogue for hyphenated surnames quite distasteful, so he is Psmith. The "p" is silent, as in "pshrimp." He is capital at any number of things, from delivering speeches to bowling at cricket, although he'd much prefer to sit back and let the world be capital at things for him, while he looks on through his monocle in amusement. He spent most of his school days at Eton, except for the forementioned last year at Sedleigh, where he met and became fast friends with Mike Jackson. He received a university education at Cambridge, spending a couple of summers moonlighting as a bank clerk in London and as a journalist in America, after which (his family's fortune having taken a turn for the worse) he entered the employ of an uncle in the fish business. It did not suit him.
Personality in seven words or less: Friendly, loquacious, and ready to be entertained.
How Others Perceive Your Character: He is eccentric, often impenetrable, yet somehow engaging. It is impossible to win an argument with him; nearly impossible to actually participate in a conversation with him (he tends to soliloquize); he does not so much talk circles around one as complex filigreed designs. Nonetheless, he is a Good Egg. He is a lad.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: His firmest belief and fondest conviction is that he will get away with anything he bothers to try. His true morals are known only to him, but can generally be assumed to be harmless; if you try to ask him, you'll receive no straight answer, but most likely a lengthy speech incorporating several classical references (which he will point out to you, that you may better appreciate his education) and perhaps a full sonnet (properly attributed, ditto). He certainly does all in his power to look after his friends, with "crime not objected to." Additionally, he claims a belief in Socialism and the redistribution of wealth, which he believes would be best served by redistributing the wealth into his own well-tailored pockets.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: Having been sore tired of the fish business, and not latching on to much in the non-fishy line in London, he has determined to try his hand in a new land, full of wide-open spaces where men are men and fish are lumberjacks, or something of that nature.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: He would like to find some honest work, although his definition of "work" is much closer to others' definition of "leisure," and his definition of "honest" is equally lax.
Twenty-Questions for the Characters:
[Note: These can be one word answers or fragments. If any of you've seen Lipton's 'ITAS' you know how this works]
1. What turns them on: Good listeners.
2. What turns them off: Fish.
3. Would they see a shrink: Yes. They have to listen to you babble. Also, the p is silent in psychiatrist, as well. Sort of a brotherhood of silent initial ps.
4. Worst Childhood experience: Falling from a tree at the age of four, and tearing a hole in his new knickerbockers.
5. Favorite Film: He is quite fond of the "summer blockbusters" that the critics rate as Ds. There is scope for amusement therein.
6. Favorite Song: Slow waltzes: a chance to dance, but not too swiftly.
7. Favorite Word: "Pulchritudinous" - it simply has a good sound to it.
8. Least Favorite Word: "Labour" - it implies that someone expects him to do it.
9. Favorite Curse Word: He doesn't curse much, but if he ever decides to, it is sure to be a zinger.
10. Best gift ever received: A copy of Thucydides' History in its original Greek, from Mike
11. Sound or Noise they hate: The alarm clock
12. Sound or Noise they love: His own voice
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: He could easily convince you that he did, even if he were wrong.
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage... and all the men and women merely players. As You Like It isn't really his favorite play, however; he prefers Hamlet.
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: Yes
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Bruce Lee
17. Half full or half empty: Half full, of course, but never for long; someone is sure to come along and fill it back up shortly. On someone else's tab.
18. Coke or Pepsi: Coke
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: Pstrawberry
20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? "Just the man We've been looking for. Please, take this seat at My left."
What the bloody goddamn is going on in Aternaville? (RP Canon Notes)
Psmith was 23 in the year 1910 when his father died, leaving him working for an uncle in the fish business, which he detested. He decided to emigrate, and took a ride on a transatlantic liner, where he picked up Comrade Hammer (a perfectly ordinary hammer, except that he has decidedly hardline socialist leanings). Upon arrival in New York he bought a ticket for Boston, but the wait for the train was too long, and he hopped the very next one out, instead, and took a nap on the ride.
When he woke up, it was August of 2006, and he was in Aternaville, Ontario, Canada.
He got a job as secretary to private investigator Philip Marlowe as a direct result of pulling a gun on him in the middle of downtown and saying "Tinkerty-tonk." They, along with Psmith's girl friend Lulu Spencer and their mutual friend John Sheppard (whom Psmith met by attempting to force him to adopt Comrade Hammer, and who was present for the subsequent gun-pulling and tinkerty-tonking), fight a gang of evil Quebecois cat-racing gangsters. Yes, cat-racing. Housecats. They bet on them, like greyhounds or horses. It's a thing.
Psmith resides at 27 Butcher Street, #1, an attic apartment adjacent to that of Ianto Jones. Although they technically do not share living quarters, there is a certain amount of Applied Socialism in the building, in that anything Ianto leaves lying around is liable to disappear, only to be found later in Psmith's one-room flat.
